Frequently Asked Questions About Slatted Fence Panels
What are slatted fence panels?
Slatted fence panels are contemporary wooden fence panels made from horizontal timber slats fixed to a sturdy frame. The slats allow natural light and airflow to pass through while still providing a level of privacy, making them a popular modern alternative to traditional lap or closeboard fencing.
Our slatted fence panels are single slatted — meaning the horizontal slats run across one face of the panel, giving a clean, consistent look from the front while keeping weight and wind resistance low. They suit both domestic garden boundaries and commercial screening projects.
What is the difference between single and double slatted fence panels?
Single slatted fence panels have horizontal timber slats on one face of the panel only. This gives a neat, contemporary finish from the front, allows good airflow, and lets natural light filter through — making them ideal for garden boundaries, patio screening, and anywhere a lighter, more open feel is wanted.
Double slatted panels have slats on both faces, offset from each other, giving a fully finished appearance on both sides with greater privacy. Walford Timber supplies single slatted fence panels. If you need maximum privacy with a two-sided finish, for example, on a shared boundary, our closeboard or lap panel range may be a better fit.
Are your slatted fence panels pressure-treated?
Yes. All our wooden slatted fence panels are pressure-treated to protect against rot, fungal decay, and wood-destroying insects — essential for outdoor fencing in the UK climate. The treatment is applied under pressure so it penetrates deep into the timber, rather than sitting on the surface like a brush-on stain.
Our slatted fencing panels are manufactured at our own sawmill in Herefordshire and are available in green or brown pressure-treated finish. Our PermaTimber® fence posts, designed to be used alongside these panels, carry a 15-year anti-rot guarantee.
What sizes do slatted fence panels come in?
Our horizontal slatted fence panels are available in a standard 6ft (1.83m) width with a choice of heights: 3ft (0.9m), 4ft (1.2m), 5ft (1.5m), and 6ft (1.8m). Both green and brown pressure-treated finishes are available across the range.
For most garden boundaries, a 6ft x 6ft slatted fence panel gives the best privacy. A 6ft x 5ft panel works well where a slightly lower boundary is preferred or where planning restrictions apply. If you need help choosing the right size, call us on 01989 563614 — we’ve been advising on fencing projects since 1945.
Do slatted fence panels need gravel boards?
Gravel boards are not required for slatted fence panels, but they are strongly recommended. They sit at the base of the fence between the posts and keep the bottom of the panel clear of soil and ground moisture — the most common cause of premature rot in wooden fence panels.
We supply both timber and concrete gravel boards that are compatible with our slatted panel range. Concrete gravel boards are the most popular choice as they are maintenance-free and highly durable. Timber gravel boards give a more natural, consistent look and should also be pressure-treated.
Can slatted fence panels be used as garden screening?
Yes. Slatted fence panels are one of the most popular choices for slatted screen fencing around patios, outdoor dining areas, hot tubs, and pool surrounds. Their horizontal timber slat design creates a stylish, contemporary screen that provides privacy without completely blocking light or airflow.
Because single slatted panels allow some air movement, they are also less susceptible to wind damage than solid fence panels — an important consideration for exposed gardens. They can be installed freestanding as a screen or used as a full perimeter slatted garden fence, and pair well with our range of timber and concrete posts.
